That's why PETA's "Angels for Animals" program is so wonderful—and so important. Can I count on you to be an "angel" for a lonely, unfortunate dog this summer?

As an "angel for animals," you can sponsor a specially designed PETA-built doghouse that will provide a needy dog with shelter to see him or her through scorching summers—and cold winters—for years to come.

Your sponsorship can immediately change the life of animals like Chow and Pit. When PETA first met these two neglected animals, their North Carolina "owner" had had them for more than a year yet had been too lazy even to name them. He simply called them "Chow" and "Pit" (after their breeds).

Each of these sweet dogs was tethered by the neck with an extremely heavy chain at the center of a large dirt circle—created by the dog's restricted range of movement at the end of the chain. The dogs could never escape their "prison yard." Pit had only a damp plastic barrel for shelter, and Chow called a grossly inadequate plastic doghouse "home." (Plastic doghouses are like ovens in the summertime.) Both dogs had dug holes in the ground in an attempt to escape the relentless summer heat.

The harsh reality is that some people cannot afford to take proper care of their dogs and cats, while others don't know how or just plain don't care. Sometimes, PETA can legally remove the dogs and even bring criminal charges against their "owners." But sometimes, we are prohibited by local laws from taking such actions. That's when we do everything we can to help reduce their daily suffering. We returned to check on Chow and Pit, and when we did, we took them PETA custom-built doghouses filled with soft straw bedding. The doghouses provided Chow and Pit with some urgently needed shade and protection from intense thunderstorms, a common occurrence in North Carolina on summer afternoons.

Since we started the program, PETA has distributed more than 4,300 doghouses, thanks to generous "angels for animals." Now, with more dogs in urgent need of shelter and temperatures at or near their year-long highs, I very much hope that we can count on your support.

No matter how much you can afford to give, I urge you to respond today. It is in economic tough times like these that unloved animals suffer the most. Nearly all the dogs we reach with our "Angels for Animals" program live in underprivileged neighborhoods. I promise you that PETA will fight as hard as we can to make sure that these dogs are not mistreated, forgotten, or ignored.

Thank you so very much for coming to the rescue of at least one sorely neglected dog this summer. Your simple act of kindness can bring one of these dear animals years of shelter, lasting them through many changing seasons, from bitter winters to scorching-hot summers.

Kind regards,
Ingrid E. They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins, stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually
have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don't have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?
The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.
Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I am!"

Episode 1 - Introduction to Top10Causes

First episode of Top10Causes web show. Founded in November 2008 by two young women who have both battled cancer, Spirit Jump believes that even a small act of kindness can help. The mission of Spirit Jump is to provide hope and comfort to the many men, women and children battling cancer. By connecting people who want to lift spirits with those individuals fighting cancer, Spirit Jump allows fighters to receive uplifting cards and inspirational gifts as they battle cancer. No item is too big or too small.

In 2007 28 year old Meaghan Edelstein was diagnosed with 3b cervical cancer and given only a 20% chance of surviving. It was during this fight that she received hundreds of cards, gifts and other tokens. These acts of love, kindness and support gave Meaghan the strength to continue her battle and eventually beat cancer.

Shortly after ending her treatments Meaghan founded Spirit Jump. It was her desire that every man, woman and child battling cancer feel the love and support she did. While a simple concept Spirit Jump has amazing affects on the lives of those who participate in the program.

If you or a loved one is battling cancer you simply email Spirit Jump (needaspiritjump@spiritjump.com) letting the Spirit Jump Team know you are in need of spirit lifting. Shortly after sending your email you will be contacted by Spirit Jump confirming your request and asking for any additional information that may be required.

Spirit Jump sends out 1 - 2 Spirit Jump email requests a week. These emails contain short stories of each Spirit Jump requester along with any photos that may have been provided. If a Spirit Jumper would like to send a card or small gift to one, or all, of the people in need they simply reply to our email letting us know who they would like help. Spirit Jump will then provide the Spirit Jumper with the information needed to send out the Jump (card or gift).

Spirit Jump is a way for YOU to have a direct affect on another's life. Whether you send 1 card a week or 1 a year your kindness will lift the Spirits of another. And, in the process your Spirits will be lifted as well.

If you would like to join Spirit Jump please send an email to spiritjumper@spiritjump.com.

If you or a loved one are in need of a Spirit Jump please send an email to needaspiritjump@spiritjump.com.

Visit http://www.spiritjump.org/ to see what people are saying about Spirit Jump! The thought goes something like this: "What would happen if we used technology to connect interested people with interesting work". We are seeking to cultivate an open-source attitude within Abundant Water (AW).

If you go and look at the "volunteer" button you might think: "Why are they asking me all these questions? What's up with these guys?" Well it's really very simple. We want to work with you in a way that engages your passion, your joie de vivre.

This means while of course we welcome your kind donations (and in fact we could not exist without them), what we really want is for you to contribute in any way you can - with one proviso. What's the catch? The catch is really very simple and easily forgotten in today's helter-skelter world. Your engagement with AW has to make you happy.

Here's a great example of what we are talking about: A four year-old boy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada didn't have a lot of money and he wasn't up on the latest theories of international development. What he did have was a great idea and an even greater need to help. Bilaal Rajan set about raising funds for victims of the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat, India by selling boxes of Clementine oranges door-to-door. After a hurricane devastated Haiti in 2004, Bilaal secured donations of cookies and recruited 12 friends to help sell them at school. Shortly after UNICEF Canada made him their official child sponsor, Bilaal helped raise almost $4 million for the Southeast Asian Tsunami relief by encouraging other kids his age to contribute by creatively fundraising within their means. Bilaal, now 11, recognized that by engaging peoples' hearts and minds (and not just their wallets), everyone could be happy. See what he is up to these days: http://www.bilaalrajan.com/blog/ <http://www.bilaalrajan.com/blog/>
Now the question is what is it that you can do that makes you happy and could help provide others with clean drinking water?

Stroke Identification

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke.! ..totally. He said the
trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the
patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,
the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer
severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of
a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(I.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS..

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency
number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the
other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

The TRUE meaning of NO-KILL by Molly Mednikow (Voted #4 - Amazon Cares)

Princess Chose Us: True Meaning of "No-Kill"
By Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety
http://www.amazoncares.org/

Princess captured the hearts of the Amazon CARES and Vet Ventures Team with her kind look. From the beginning of the year (2009), day and night she remained close by, closely watching us as we worked the Sterilization Campaign for the benefit of the city of Requena. It was she who chose us as her master.

The health status of Princess was very poor. We have tried our best to treat her skin problems, other issues, and even had a balanced diet flown from Iquitos for her (no nutritionally balanced dog food is available for public sale in Requena).

Slowly, Princess was getting better, and treatments seemed to be working, but then Princess started to have convulsions. We all got very worried, and considered poisoning, reaction to medicine, renal problem, and diabetes, as possible problems. Concerns and frustration grew; impatient for a solution to health problems we asked a distant laboratory for a diagnosis. Just as she began to improve again, we received the diagnosis: she is a Collie-mix, and Collies can react to treatment of scabies with convulsions, similar to poisoning.

As the days passed, Princess became a member of the Amazon CARES and Vet Ventures Teams, while our deadline to leave Requena grew close. The thought of leaving Princess behind to wander alone and defenseless in the streets tormented us all. She had captured our hearts, so we brought her with us. In Iquitos, healthy and happy, she will have a better chance to have a family.

Princess had another surprise for us, though. Her convulsions were back.

Alarmed by this situation, we performed various examinations and finally discovered that Princess has Epilepsy. In dogs, epilepsy is very similar to that in humans, and can be defined as, "an unloading of electrochemistry in the brain, appearing at any time and becoming repetitive with time.” This means that Princess needs medicines like Fenobarbital and Silimarina for the rest of her life in order to control the seizures. Since receiving these medications, there has been no more convulsions and Princess now waits be adopted.

Amazon CARES has decided to administer these medications to Princess for anyone who adopts her, for as long as is necessary, since these medications are strictly regulated under the Peruvian law.

___________________________________________________________________

The TRUE meaning of NO-KILL

by Molly Mednikow, Director and Founder of Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety (http://www.amazoncares.org)

Let me quote a 2005 PETA newsletter article, to demonstrate how many "no-kill shelters operate:

"One day last June, a Pennsylvania man tried to turn his dog over to a “no-kill” shelter—one that chooses not to euthanize animals. He was told to come back two weeks later when the shelter might have room. The man grabbed his dog, got in his pick-up truck, and left. At the first intersection, he threw the dog out of the truck and ran over him, crushing the dog beneath the tires. Shelter workers, who wouldn’t help the dog before he died, collected his remains. ‘No-Kill’ or ‘No-Clue’? “No-kill” animal shelters should really be called“leave-the-killing-to-someone-else” shelters."

Ironically, PETA does support euthanasia. It is an extremely difficult issue, with solid arguments on both sides. While working to alleviate animal suffering following September 2007’s devestating 8.2 Richter Earthquake and resulting Tsunami, I had to face this issue head on. Many animals suffered back injuries or multiple broken bones. Many animals were sick prior to the Earthquake, and we had nowhere to place them. During that time, for the first time, I was faced with the euthanasia of multiple animals.

These animals, free from their pain and suffering, did not free my conscience. I still remember the dedicated local volunteers that carefully carried the animal remains to a back garden of one clinic space. We were assured the government would dig a large hole, at least 10 feet deep, to dispose of these animals in the most environmentally safe manner available.

Near the end of the day somebody opened a curtain facing the outside garden area. I was faced with wheelbarrows full of euthanized animals, and my heart broke. Yet in this situation, there were few options.

Years ago I had the opportunity to purchase 2.2 acres of prime property of the Itaya river. The Itaya is a ributary of the Amazon and the water is much cleaner there. We are fortunate to have plenty of space for animals. Our only restriction is having funds to support these animals.

Many no-kill shelters say they won't euthanize any "adoptable" dog. Often, dogs need medical treatment, even minor treatment. Yet shelters won't or can't expend the resources, and these animals are euthanized.

There are many breed restrictions. These animals are euthanized.

If a pet is older, he is likely to be euthanized.

If the pet exhibits behavorial problems (often developed during their stay at a shelter), the pet will be euthanized.

Amazon Community Animal Rescue and Safty is very committed to our "No-Kill" policy. Best Friends Rapid Response Manager, Rich Crook, visited CARES and actually gave our program a name. He called it a "Lifetime Resident Program." Most of our animals have suffered abuse, trauma, life on the street and a daily struggle to survive. It is always amazing to see the trust and love these animals want to give after being rescued.

Sadly, some animals can't regain this trust. They prefer the company of other animals to people, and they happily run free on our 2.2 acre animal sanctuary, where the kennels are rarely locked.

Some animals have recurring conditions for which they will always need monitoring. These animals become lifetime residents. One such animal was set on fire. Eventually, wiry white hair grew back, but scars are still apparent, and she requires special skin treatments every two weeks.

Transmissable venereal tumors (TVT's) are very common in Iquitos. These tumors are treated with cancer drugs which are very expensive. We never hesitate to treat these cases, even when the chance of survival are slim, and despite the cost of these medicines. These animals are not euthanized unless their quality of life is low and they are suffering.

These animals become part of our family. As long as they live comfortably and have a good quality of life, they will never experience euthanasia.

I do want to make it clear that at times euthanasia is required. This occurs when a pet suffers from Distemper or another highly contagious disease. I am no longer allowed to be in the room when euthanasia must be performed. I cry and I try to comfort the animal, and end up making the veterinary staff nervous and sad. Yet I never forget a single animal.

To me - THIS is the TRUE definition of No-Kill. - Molly Mednikow

About Molly:

In 2004. Molly Mednikow sold everything to move to Perú where she now runs a successful and progressive animal welfare charity. Broad thinking led Molly to establish programs to coincide with animal rescue endeavors. Humane Education for all ages, Animal Therapy, and Veterinary volunteers add much to the CARES agenda, and despite flooding setbacks in 2009, CARES thrives with the aid of international support. My life with depression started very, very young. It wasn't myself that suffered from depression at the age of 3, it was my paternal grandmother. What I can remember of her was that she was this tall, statuesque, woman. I was very young and do not have alot of memories, one that I do have seems so silly but it is the one I hold on to and the one I retell often. This memory was that when visiting my grandmother we were only allowed to use 1 square of toilet paper for number 1 and 2 squares for number 2. It is a memory that always puts a smile on my face and I know that would make my grandmother very happy.

You may be wondering how this ties in with depression. Well, my grandmother, when she divorced from my grandfather, fell into a depression. I like to call it the "broken heart" depression. The reason I only have memories up to the age of 3 is because my grandmother ended up committing suicide. She overdosed and was found in her bath tub filled with water. I did not get a chance to really know her, but I know how much she loved me and I have the best and the most happiest and silliest memory that I will cherish forever.

This wasn't the last visit from depression in my life. This time it was personal, it was me. When I was 15 I attempted suicide by overdose. There were many things that lead up to it. I just decided to not return home to my mother, due to a difficult relationship with her, while I was visiting my father, in a different province, during my annual summer visit. I was in a new city, starting high school in a city where I didn't know anyone, and that is a huge deal for a teenager. Things started off great, made friends fast, had a new boyfriend, etc.

Then, being a typical teenager, got in trouble with my dad a couple times, with a loaded threat, if I messed up again, back to my mother I go. You guessed it, I messed up and at the same moment my new boyfriend broke up with me. It was the end of the world for me, for two reasons. After the fact, it was a teenager screaming out for attention. I got the attention, and I got the help I need.

The thing is I never recall ever hearing anyone say I was depressed. I never took medication for depression or anything of that kind. But there were obviously emotional issues within me.

Fast forward 20 years. My life was going well, great job, great family, great partner. As the story goes with depression things start to go downhill, and downhill fast, with no warning. This time my Aunt died quickly from ovarian cancer and it hit our family hard. Then my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and became very ill. I experienced a miscarriage. My relationship of 3 years was falling apart. It just all became overwhelming, I couldn't breath. I found myself crying everyday, unable to sleep but unable to get out of bed. Off to the doctors I went. She asked the standard check list symptom questions to determine if I was depressed, and I had 9 out of the 10 symptoms. This was the first time in my life that I heard the diagnosis of major depression. The darkness sucked the life out of me for 8 months. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. With the help of medication and a great book, I have done a complete 360.

The problem with me was that I didn't know how to let things go. Every negative emotion, memory, feeling I had in my life I held inside and either ignored it or refused to deal with it. What happens when you over fill a balloon? It is going to explode. That is what happened to me. At the age of 35 my mind finally had enough of my hording of emotions and overwhelmed me with all of them at the same time.

I'm now 38 and survived the darkness called depression. What I have learned is that there is no point holding onto negativity from the past, doing so robs you of the beauty of the present. Ever day I tell the world what I am grateful for and how lucky I am to be alive. Something I tell myself when a moment of sadness is upon me is something I read in the book "A New Earth"; THIS TOO WILL PASS.

Remembering Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett

I am deeply saddened by the sudden death of Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen. Michael Jackson's career of hits are the sound track to my life. He was only 12 years old when I was born and his career was just starting to sky rocket. I remember as a very young child the only songs I ever remembered on the radio were the Jackson 5 songs. I remember receiving the Thriller album on my 12th Birthday and watching the video on a cable channel I didn't get, but watched it through the white noise haze and loved it. I remember practicing the choreography for Thriller with my sister and putting on little performances to the family. I watched in horror when his hair caught fire while filming the Pepsi commercial. I saw him get married a few times, questionably. I saw his dream come true when he became a father. I loved him, I worried for him, I felt sorry for him, I prayed for him, I idolized him, I have been disappointed in him, confused by him, supportive of him, proud of him, shocked by him, consoled by him (through music), inspired by him and in awe of him. He touched my life through 4 decades of music and his music will forever be the soundtrack of my life. http://bit.ly/Ke9ZK <--- Video Tribute

On this day I also mourn the death of the strongest woman I know who fought a great battle against cancer and is truly an inspiration to me. To see her strength throughout her battle was totally awe inspiring. I remember wanting to be her with that gorgeous mane of hair when I was a little girl...I thought she was the most beautiful woman I ever saw, next to my mother of course. The way she carried herself with dignity, pride, strength, grace and strength, will never be forgotten and never duplicated. You will always be our Angel. http://bit.ly/6BsKW <---Video Tribute

Although I am deeply saddened by both of these losses my thoughts and prayers are still with the people fighting for freedom and democracy in Iran. We hear you, we speak for you and support you. Be strong, be wise, be safe and never stoop to the bullies level, rise above them, as I know you will. http://blip.fm/~8lq6u <---Dedicated to all in Iran fighting for freedom & democracy

Peace & Love
xo

My Life Experiences...continued

Do not get me wrong I have had so many great, positive, memorable experiences in my life, for example, the birth of my daughter. This experience, too, brought me great strength and wisdom as did all the other great experiences I have had the pleasure of having throughout my life. There have been experiences in my life that were so positive that they, too, give me reason to want to support and bring awareness to so many inspiring causes on Twitter.

I have been inspired both positively and negatively in my life, but the point is I have turned all my experiences into learning experiences. And from these learning's came the drive and desire to share the knowledge and wisdom I have gained through them. Be it through sharing my story in this blog or by spreading awareness to causes and charities that mean alot to me.

On this blog I will share both the positive and negative to show my reasons for doing what I do with @Top10Causes on Twitter. I hope you will continue to read my blog and learn more about me, personally, and share in exchange of knowledge and wisdom from experience amongst ourselves.

Love & Peace
xo

My Life Experiences

As I mentioned in my previous post I am going to share many of my life experiences on this blog. Life experiences that remind me of why I am doing what I am doing with Top 10 Causes.

In my life I have had alot of memorable happy moments in my life and at some point I will share those. But it is the not so happy moments that I have learned the most from and have become stronger from. It is these moments that I am going to share with you. Yes, they may be sad and shocking, but it is these moments that I wished I was aware of all the amazing causes and charities our there that could have helped me through the unhappy moments in my life.

I have needed help so many times in my life and had no idea that there was somewhere I could turn for support. As a child I watched my mother get beaten numerous times and spent many nights in Women's Shelters. Alot of the fights were fueled by alcohol and the addiction of alcohol was running rampant in my entire family, aunts, uncles, etc. I am grateful my mother had somewhere to turn in HER time of need.

Abuse and alcoholism was a big problem in my entire family. One of the most traumatic life experiences I had in my entire childhood was because of alcohol. I was 6 years old, I was visiting my favorite uncle,
Uncle Ted, and I was the apple of his eye. He always took me for ice cream and had little gifts everytime I came to visit him. This one visit he gave me a Doll Lamp and I loved it. Just when we were getting ready to leave, his wife, drunk, came in and got extremely angry at him for giving me the lamp that she claimed was hers. We left to let them have privacy. As we reached our house we could hear the phoning ringing inside, I remember my grandma running in to get the phone and I followed in shortly after, she was on the ground in tears. My uncle had been murdered, by his wife. My entire life, until the age of 30, I blamed myself for his death. 24 years later, after a long conversation with my grandmother, she helped me find peace and let go of the blame I put on myself. Thank you grandma.

This life experience is why I support, with all my heart, Women Shelters and charities relating to stopping violence against women. Addiction programs, as I wished my family were aware of these programs and would have utilized them when I was a child. I also support charities/causes that help families/children deal with Addictions within their family. Victim Assistance programs are another cause I support as I wish a program was available for me as a child so I could have got help sooner on letting go of the blame.

This is one of many life experiences I will share with you to give you a more personal insight into why I do what I do with @Top10Causes. I work hard to bring awareness to all the amazing causes out there, as I hope to help at least one person find the help and support they need when they need it.

Why I Started Top 10 Causes

As you know the main reason I started Top10Causes was because I came across so many great causes on Twitter. But there are so many other reasons that I spend my spare time supporting and bringing awareness to all these amazing causes.

Like many, I have had many experiences in my life that I wish I knew of a cause or charity that could help me. My life has been touched by, directly and indirectly, suicide, murder, rape, physical abuse, depression, cancer, teen pregnancy, and addictions. It is because of these moments in my life that I so strongly believe that AWARENESS is the best FREE way to donate to your causes/charity.

When I share and exchange information about so many great causes on Twitter, believe me when I say, it is from the bottom of my heart that I do what I do for these causes.

@Top10Causes 1st Post

With the popularity of blogs I thought it was only appropriate to create a blog for Top10Causes.

On this blog I am going to write about the NEW Top10Causes currently being voted on by the people on Twitter.
